Essential Highlands of Scotland Tour - 10 hours (approx)
On this tour we will leave the Lowlands of Scotland and head to the mystical and magical beauty of the Scottish Highlands. Look forward to experiencing how the land changes from gently undulating to the rugged and mountainous terrain of the Scottish Highlands.
Our first short stop will be Stirling Castle. Strategically, Stirling Castle was the most important historical location during the medieval period. Whoever controlled Stirling, controlled the “Gateway to the North” and ultimately controlled the whole country. Marvel at King James the Fifth’s renaissance palace or the grandeur of the Great Hall. These and other ancient buildings have stood for around 500 years and were seen as a safe haven for the royal family in times of trouble.
From here we will head to the tiny hamlet of Kilmahog to visit Hamish, Honey and Baxter. These magnificent Highland Cows are celebrated throughout Scotland and countless visitors come to feed them and take photos.
Our next stop is the grave of the notorious folk hero, Rob Roy MacGregor. A cattle rustler and trader, but also a brave and heroic soldier and Jacobite. We will pay our respects at his resting place in the grounds of the ruinous Balquhidder church. It is both a stunning and atmospheric location but also tranquil. It is one of the gems of our Essential Highland Tour.
The wonderful Falls of Dochart are next on our Highland Adventure. River rapids meet waterfalls flowing fast and furious over the rocks and under the bridge are a sight to behold. They are stunning when the weather is dry and breathtaking when the weather is wet and rainy.
We then head to Tyndrum where we will stop for lunch before heading up to possibly the nicest view in Britain. The Three Sisters of Glencoe is absolutely magical. Formed by extinct volcanoes and shaped by the Ice Age, this place is truly unforgettable.
Glencoe is our turning point before we start heading south. Our next stop is the quaint village of Luss which sits on the banks of Loch Lomond. This stunning little conservation village was home to the workers of the slate mines nearby and who worked for the Clan Colquhoun.
The final leg of your adventure will take you back to Edinburgh through some really picturesque countryside.
