Immerse yourself in medieval England. Northumberland is a treasure trove of history, castles, battles and stunning scenery. Only 90 minutes from Edinburgh, it’s a wonderful day trip and fascinating to see the past from an English perspective.
This tour gives you the choice of three of our favourite castles. We recommend two of them for a leisurely day and lunch in a quant countryside pub. Alternatively, we can visit all three but with less time at each location.
BAMBURGH CASTLE
Visit the real Last Kingdom of Bebbanburg. Discover over 3,000 years of incredible history, high adventure, exhilarating views and the stunning North Sea coastline.
Explore the fortress and see historic treasures. Delve into the extraordinary tales of The Last Kingdom, Vikings, knights and dragons. Imagine yourself being transported back in time and being crowned King or Queen of the North.
ALNWICK CASTLE
This magnificent fortress has over 950 years of history to discover. It was built in the Norman period and since 1309 its story has been intertwined with that of the Percy family. The family’s history is as illustrious as the castle’s. Sir Henry Percy nicknamed Harry Hotspur was a particular thorn in the side of the Scottish monarchy.
For Harry Potter fans, this is the actual Hogwarts. It is an awesome castle in its own stunning grounds and is right in the heart of the ancient town of Alnwick.
CHILLINGHAM CASTLE
Are you brave enough to visit Britain’s most haunted castle? This twelfth century castle became the fully fortified fortress in 1344 and the family bloodline has remained ever since.
Chillingham occupied a strategic position in Northumberland’s bloody border feuds with Scotland. A favoured destination of royalty over the centuries with King Edward I (Longshanks) having his own room to this day. Be careful entering this room though as it’s reputed to be the most haunted place in the castle.
It’s like walking back in time and you can feel the atmosphere as soon as you walk in the castle. Beware of the gruesome torture chamber and claustrophobic dungeon.
For a truly medieval experience, we don’t think Chillingham can be beaten.

- This private tour takes visitors to the two or three castles listed above subject to the duration spent at each.
- Tours run all year round, unless shown as unavailable on the booking calendar.
- Bamburgh Castle is open throughout the year, but Alnwick and Chillingham are only open through April-October.
- Pick-ups and drop-offs are made at all hotels and guesthouses within the city centre. Multiple pick-ups are not available.
- This tour is not suitable for passengers from cruise ships due to the limited time in port.
- Children must be accompanied by their parents or an appropriate adult.
- Cost of entry to any attractions is not included in the cost of this tour. Prices on request.
